Ernie Searling from Bushey, Hertfordshire, joined the military the day after World War Two started. During the conflict, Ernie served in countries including the Netherlands, Belgium and Gibraltar.

He originally wanted to join the police as a medic, but was turned away due to not having a medical licence. The police officer Ernie spoke to then suggested the Royal Marines as an alternative career option. Ernie later said he had no regrets about joining the service.

It was part of Quantum care home’s scheme to grant wishes to some of their residents, to coincide with their 25th anniversary. As part of his day out, Ernie was also presented with a new blue beret, his original beret marked his service under King George VI and the new one under the current monarch.
