Stonewall Rates Armed Forces In Top 100 LGBT Employers

Posted on January 21, 2019

The Royal Marines and Royal Navy are in 15th place, the Army is joint 51st and the RAF is in 68th place on the list. It is an improvement from last year’s list when the Royal Navy and Royal Marines were 32nd and the British Army at 84th. It is the first time the RAF has featured in the list since 2015.

The Security Service M15 came 4th on this year’s list which was topped by a law firm and also included a number of universities, a fire brigade and a bank. Organisations that take part are scored according to their policies, their senior leader engagement and their activities to promote equality for their LGBT+ employees.

Darren Towers, Stonewall’s executive director, said: “Stonewall was set up 30 years ago to fight against the introduction of Section 28 – a vicious piece of legislation that banned local authorities from ‘promoting homosexuality’. LGBT-inclusive employers play a crucial role in changing society by using their power and influence to proudly support LGBT people in their organisations.”
