He died from his injuries on Monday. A passenger in the vehicle, also in the military, suffered a suspected broken arm and was taken to hospital for treatment.
North Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident. An Army spokesperson confirmed SSgt McKelvie died while on duty, and said: “Our thoughts are with Staff Sergeant McKelvie’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
SSgt McKelvie had served with the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry since the regiment’s formation in October 2014. The regiment said via Facebook that he “was well known and respected” and went to say he was a “dependable, honest, robust and highly capable operator and moreover a mentor to our more junior people. The pain we feel regimentally cannot compare to that which his family suffer at this tragic time and our thoughts are with all of them,” the Facebook post continued.
SSgt McKelvie had previously served with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and is understood to have served tours in Kosovo and Iraq.
