“Shannon The Cannon” Dies Aged 58

Sergeant Shannon served in the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery – the unit in charge of firing the gun – and served as a recruiting sergeant for the Territorial Army. He served as District Gunner until 2012 and fired the famous gun the when ‘The Office’ star Ricky Gervais launched his Fringe show at the castle in 2007. Tributes have poured in for the 58-year-old following his death. Ian Wren tweeted: “I had the pleasure to serve with Jamie in 105 Regiment Royal Artillery. He truly was a gentleman and will be sadly missed.” Fellow veteran and curator of the Military Museum Scotland Ian Inglis said: “A good mate passed away this morning. A great guy and well known around the world. RIP Jamie Shannon the Cannon.”
