NATO Mission: 3 Para Deploys To Afghanistan

Posted on November 20, 2018

The NATO-led Resolute Support mission focuses on training, advising and assisting the Afghan security forces and institutions. The mission was launched on 1 January 2015, following the standing down of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The UK leads the Kabul Security Force (KSF), which provides protection for NATO civilian staff engaged in capacity-building programmes in Afghanistan, and mentors Afghan forces in the capital. The Paratroopers will take over from the Welsh Guards, 200 of which arrived in Afghanistan in September.  The number of British personnel in Afghanistan is set to be at more than a thousand, after the announcement to send 440 more troops to the country in July. It came as the government confirmed so-called Islamic State fighters in Afghanistan were communicating with cells in the UK and western Europe. The Paratroopers will also join members of 3 PARA who deployed to Kabul in October.
