The Nepali mountaineer was born in the Dhaulagiri region of Nepal and joined the Brigade of Gurkhas in 2003 before joining the Royal Marines six years later.

All of the mountain peaks that make up the ‘Project Possible’ challenge stand at more than 8,000-metres-tall and are found in the Himalayas.

Mr Purja and his team faced delays before taking on the 8,027-metre-high mountain as they waited on a permit from the Chinese government. His permit was granted on 15 October.

Purja began his campaign in Nepal in April and climbed Mount Everest in May.

In May, he helped rescue a climber on Mount Annapurna who was left stranded for two days after falling ill.

During the challenge, Purja and his team battled through avalanches and personal injuries on their way to smashing the record.
